Why need to remove Norton before running AVG etc?

I thought I'd posted this question but can't find it anywhere!

Can someone please tell me why the need to remove Norton before installing avg etc.
I installed and ran avg and spybot and have not yet removed Norton, so where do I stand?

Norton is a bit of a resource hog, it will also defy attempts to remove it, you need to run Symantec's Norton removal tool to get rid completely.

so is it alright to remove Norton after downloading and running the other programs?

Re-the version of Norton on my machine, how do I find out which one I have, as don't have a product key to use because it came loaded on the new machine.

The options on the page you cited penrhyn asks to choose and I'm not sure which removal tool I require?! Do I assume I have Norton product 2007

mc affee stuff hangs around in your system too after you think it's been removed, funny how 2 of the biggest anti-virus providers, plague your computer with their own kind of (harmless?) germs.

I'm on shaky ground here but if you open your Norton product up, click on settings, and then on about, if its version 10 then I think that's the 2007 product, I assume the PC is fairly new.

The short answer is "It doesn't matter which version of Norton you have installed".

The different options to select only give you different instructions about saving your license key. The tool that you download is the same. So, if you only want to uninstall it and never install it again, then the instructions are irrelevant.
