Should I claim on insurance?

This is probably an obvious question but I'd appreciate a bit of advice as (touch wood) I've never had to make a car insurance claim before.

Scraped and dented my car when turning out of a driveway, entirely my fault, no other cars or drivers involved.

Local body shop reckon £850 or so to repair as a new door needed. Insurance excess is £150. We've got a good no claims built up over 5 years and so my understanding is that if claiming is going to up my premium by more than £700 then it's not sensible to claim on the insurance.

Problem is I don't really know how the claim will affect the no claims and I don't think I can just ask the insurer can I? I've been told that once you call an insurer to enquire about a claim, that is it, the claim is on your record and you lose out even if you don't go ahead with the claim. Is that right?

Car is oldish but would not be a write off.

TIA.

Do some dummy quotes with the reduction in NCB to get an idea of price.
  • You will pay more for couple of years, so depending on your usual insurance policy cost, you may pay more than £700-800 over the years. Claim will have to be declared for 5 years.
  • does anyone know if it's true that the no claims is lost as soon as you enquire?

it's not true. your premiums may rise once you notify them of the accident, but only a claim will affect your accrued NCD.
