If the house was not on a busy road, would it cost more?

Not for me. Pollution would be my number 1 issue not noise.. It's literally a killer and I would worry each time I was in the drive.

I would never live closer than say 50 metres to a main road. I see houses backing onto dual carriageways and it sends me a shiver.

If it had a long driveway that wouldn't be as bad. Just remember roads will only get busier.....much more busier.

Moving cars don't bother me, but drivers honking their horns at the traffic lights or sitting in the traffic with music blaring really bothers me. Also pedestrians are a real pain - shouting, screaming, littering etc. It's not the busy road but it's the antisocial people using the busy road for me.

Unless I was in like a 5th floor and above apartment, I wouldn’t live on a busy or even semi busy road.

It isn’t just the noise, but also pollution. You may find that you need to clean your outside more often as they seem to get dirty regularly.

I've moved from busy road to cul-de-sac, and have to say my health and mental health has improved. The road was a 40mph rat run and bus route. 40mph to many drivers meant 60mph. The HGVs would rattle the house. Hated it eventually, couldn't wait to move.
  • Thanks everyone. I spoke to a forum member and she was helpful to point out issues with the house - aka money out ;)

So the houses are overpriced etc.
  • I also remembered a short term flat arrangement on the sixth floor - but it was next to a road. Man that noise drove my crazy.

The house in question that I wanted to view wasn’t on a comparatively noisy road, but omg that road.

I've never lived on busy roads. I currently live at the end of a quiet cul de sac backing on to a large pond and wooded area. The traffic is mainly access to the other couple of cul de sacs further down and the occasional noisy motorbike or kiddie racer goes past and it's very noticeable.

I once had a lodger who lasted a month - she said it was too quiet for her and she couldn't sleep a night. She was used to traffic and not peace or the noise of the local wildlife or the dawn chorus from the trees outside her window.

Just to provide some balance I'm the complete opposite. I have lived next to very busy roads in several cities and towns most of my life. I now own a home in the suburbs where the garden backs onto a Woods and every neighbour has a comment about lawn maintenance. Don't actually like it at all and miss my busy road.
