Read the following. I live in an over 60s Housing Association house and recently one of the residents had a washing machine fire. I have cut and paste the warning they sent round

“Following a recent fire in one of our courts, residents and staff are urged to ensure that oil residues have been removed from clothing and towels before being placed into tumble dryers.

This warning comes after the on-site therapist towels were washed at too low a temperature leaving behind oil (grapeseed) residues. The towels were then placed inside a tumble dryer where the heat caused the oils to combust, setting fire to the towels and causing a fire inside the drum of the dryer.

Other fires have been experienced due to aprons, tea towels and clothes with cooking oil residues being placed in tumble dryers, which then caught fire in the heat.”

This may not be relevant to you as it is a fire in a tumble dryer, I don’t know if this sort of thing could happen in a washing machine. If you contact your local Fire Brigade, they may have a Fire Safety Officer who could come out and do a fire hazard review, you could then show them the info I have posted. I know the Dorset FB do this as we have had one recently

    Hope this helps

So that is an actual fire in heated dry clothes and not smoke from a washing machine containing wet clothes.

I don't see the connection between the two

Possibly not relevant, but still a useful post
