Car insurance company claiming we owe them

Hello, looking for advise please. When we changed address my daughters car insurance company wanted to drastically increase the premium. We decided to cancel and go elsewhere as it was cheaper. The insurance company were fine with this and even said she was due a small refund, we even have an email confirming this. Now 8 months later they have got in touch saying they mis-calculated and she owes them £260. Where do we stand with this as I think we can just tell them to forget it and were not paying as it was there fault.
Appreciate any advise
Thanks

Do you understand the basis of either calculation?
If she’d paid up front then a small refund after cancellation charge sounds about right.
Or was she paying monthly and hence had a finance arrangement?
My guess is that fees have come in relating to cancelling the loan??

Do you have a legal helpline on your home insurance you could call for professional advice?

Doesn't sound right. Write asking them to explain how they came to that figure.

Even if paying monthly I can't see how cancellation/administrative and exit fees could come to £260 unless her premiums were very high to begin with. Perhaps £100 at a stretch.

    Who was she with?

What was the original terms when she took the policy out, did it have a black box and what are the cancellation rates?
