She's possibly just chancing her arm as we say here!
And hoping you'll cave in and absorb the costs, if you don't budge, it's likely she'll still go ahead or maybe you can reach a compromise. I doubt she wants to pull out over it either.
Would you actually be moving to Ireland to get a house like that at such a price?

In 5-6 years we’d like to go to Ireland or France definitely, perhaps before if family logistics allow. Husband works for a French bank and is currently between Ireland and the UK but could transfer full time to mainland Europe. Ireland office pays exactly the same but we wouldn’t be paying SE England prices. I have an Irish passport and speak decent French (half Irish, half North African) which helps somewhat but DD is just about to start at a secondary she loves and her whole life is here so I’d like to let her finish her GCSEs and then if she won’t come to an international school or Irish college she could stay with her grandma term time (she’s always gone to private schools with boarding houses so us living apart term time wouldn’t be a strange concept for her!). I’m hoping if we go to mainland Europe before this baby is 6 it’ll have a good chance at being bilingual and not think the chilterns is the centre of the universe like DD does!

Ultimately we want a slower pace of life, to be more self sufficient and allow this child to have a simpler childhood away from the middle class bubble we live in now. France and Ireland appeal because of the space and property, as well as the education. I also think DH has fallen a bit out of love with England with all the political turmoil of late (his industry is already dealing with the fallout) but I’m of the opinion we should see what happens and not make decisions out of anger.

If we stayed in the UK I’d quite like to move somewhere like the Peaks but either way the thought of staying in this town until I die fills me with terror!

Sorry for the long rambling posts, feeling very confused and quite anxious at the moment!

You ramble away! No worries, your posts are interesting and informative.
It sounds like you have your head screwed on and will cope with whatever the outcome may be re the house or any future relocation.
On paper you seem to have it all, but I know that's not always the case.
My DD and husband are awaiting a delayed completion on their first house, have been living with us for over a year and have Another issue too so I enjoy hearing about happy families!
    I need serious cheering up.
