Does steam cleaning work to get rid of moths in carpets? Does it damage the carpet?

We had this , a bad infestation some years back . Fortunately we also have a Polti Vaporetto steam cleaner. about the size of a large vac, (had it for Yonks ) This got rid of the problem , killed the larvae and also all the eggs . Unfortunately by the time we found the problem the carpet had a fair bit of damage.0
