SSE Superdeal

I am still on SSE Superdeal which is excellent because it gives my storage heaters a two hour boost in the afternoon. What is not excellent is that SSE know that I am reluctant to leave this service so have particularly cranked up the price over the last two years. In the MSE comparison site it shows that I am paying 39% more than economy 7 offers currently available (but these deals do not offer to change my meter to economy 7).
In the current climate of green electricity from wind power what are my options? It seems wrong to rip it all out and install gas central heating.

I don't think SSE are setting their prices based on whether or not you will personally will leave them.

The MSE comparison site does not allow comparisons for people like you on the SSE Superdeal, so not sure where you are looking.

Options are to stay with SSE on their Superdeal tariff, ask SSE to charge you full rate for all usage (probably not very moneysaving), or ask SSE to change your metering so that it is universally accepted by proctically all suppliers.

SSE might agree to charge you on standard tariff for all 3 meter readings but having done the sums for my stepdaughter recently the new SSE fixed 1 year and 2 year tariffs still work out cheaper (even though they will be 40% higher than the fixed rate she's on now that ends in a couple of weeks. (If you can't find the new Superdeal tariffs drop me a PM and I'll send the link..they're not easy to find on SSE's site)

I think I recall someone on the forum mentioning that Bulb might also treat all the readings as a single rate supply [STRIKE]without requiring wiring / meter changes[/STRIKE] and they might have a cheaper 'standard' tariff (and there may be other suppliers that would do similar). We didn't investigate this as she would need landlords permission and the problem with switching away from SSE is that no one else provides the Superdeal tariff and they are not obligated to accept you back if you needed to (as might be the case in tenanted flat to keep to the terms of agreement).

EDIT: Wasn't on this forum I saw the mention of Bulb - it was here:

    https://community.bulb.co.uk/discussion/11256/finally-a-customer-previously-on-sse-superdeal-tariff

However it does appear that they had to have a meter change.

August bill shows that SSE have hiked their superdeal rates yet again. 23.02p unit day, 14.67 night, 13.69p stored.

    What should I do?

Ask for a smart meter then I would be able to change suppliers?
  • I phoned SSE and they agreed to change my meter to Economy 7, and the cheapest SSE Economy 7 tariff has no exit fee.
With the new meter I should be able to change suppliers easily.
When they change my meter I will ask if they will also delete my second MPAN (meter account) leaving me with just one MPAN like any normal house.
  • Update. I requested SSE to change my meter to Economy 7. This was done free of charge and I was transfered to an SSE Economy 7 tariff. The man who changed the meter said I did not need to do anything about the second MPAN. I phoned SSE and they said it wasn't done automatically. I requested that they request the logical removal of the (now unused) meter point administration number from the national database. After several weeks I phoned SSE again to confirm the disused MPAN has been removed. They said it was no longer showing on my account but the national database is very slow to be updated. So, I am hoping for the best because I am moving to supplier GREEN next week...

Seems rather ironic, doesn't it, that everyone is having to switch away from SSE's superdeal & flexiheat tariffs due to price gouging? These were invented 30 years ago to take advantage of low grid prices for heating, and can switch heating on/off at half hour intervals... Rather like smart meters, in fact!

I've noticed that the heating times have been more or less fixed for the last ten years. I'm not sure if this is SSE's idleness, or if the cheap times genuinely are exactly the same every day throughout the year.
