Warning - Spam Email

I know this is not the usual place to post something here but I wanted to warn everyone about entering these competitions with your personal email address.

I have just started to enter these competitions in this forum and stupid me used my personal email address which has my full name in it instead of an email specially for things like competitions.

I have in the last few days started receiving spam email saying allsorts and quite rude.

Unfortunately i noticed though that these emails had not only been sent to me but to every tom !!!!!! and harry they have on their database and havent hid the email addresses from each other. Therefore I have their email addresses and they have mine.

So anyone who is just starting to enter these competitions, please please use a seperate email address!

Thanks

Laura

Have you cosidered it could be due to those missing government disks?
Only kidding, its no laughing matter. You must be very vigilant about not signing up to 3rd party contact requests, but I'm sure you do that anyway.
    Good luck,

I have just received an email from a pharmaceutical company I got a 'freebie' from as recommended on another MSE forum. The addresses of hundreds of other people were also contained on it. I complained to the individual, their head office and told them that they had breached data protection laws.
The individual then sent out a recall message with all the same names on!
It would seem that you cannot tell some companies. The Information Commissioners were not impressed with them!

Have you just been entering the comps on this forum or have you entered any on vouch4me, toyhound, getmeaticket, or plum offers? I think there are some more sites like that but I can't remember any others offhand. They're usually the ones which overload you with spam which is why the regulars on this board will give a warning if any are posted. I don't have much of a problem with spam even though I use my personal email but I've learned to recognize it and just report it to my ISP.

    HTH and good luck

  • Hi enigmaL

Yes it is only the competitions on this website i have entered. But i have since set up a new email address and use this one when entering them.

When the spam emails come though I block them (41 of them so far) and i can only block 100 in total.

They all seem to be the same layout and content but each time its from another email address!

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks

You're never going to stop getting spam i'm sorry to say.It sounds like you expect to enter the comps on here and not expect spam?

I use a comping email addy and even though i make sure i tick all the boxes for no further contact i still do get quite a bit so they probably just ignore the boxes.

Googlemail are very good at filtering out spam mails. I get 100's a day but they all get filtered to my spam folder. Million times better than AOL, Yahoo and Hotmail which I have used in the past.

There is also an option to delte all messages in the spam folder with two clicks of the mouse.

To be honest, once you start getting spam there is not a lot you can do to stop it.

Ditto - I get loads of spam (I always have done though, long before I started comping) but I can't remember the last time any of it went through to my inbox - Google Mail sends it all to the spam folder. Although sometimes I do go through and read the subjects for a bit of a laugh :D:D :rotfl:
Wins: Jan-Sept:£1991.27, Nov: "The Rough Guide to the iPhone" book, "FWD this link" book ... £12.98
Win £2008 in 2008 number 60, only £3.75 to go! (it is highly likely I'll win absolutely nothing else now this year! ;))
