Repairing rear bumper scuffs

Hi,
I have a few scuffs on my rear bumper, and am wondering if I can repair this myself or if I need to take it to a bodyshop. I’ve seen a variety of kits, plus various fillers/pastes and primers. I intend to sell the car by April 2019 at the latest, so I’m not fussed if the most cost effective method shows after a year. Just as long as I don’t have value deducted from the car when I sell it.

The scratches have gone through to the plastic unfortunately in places, and in some spots just the first few layers of paint(I think), but I’d rather try and fix it myself than pay £200 circa for a bodyshop to do it. The scuff above my left tyre and on my rear bumper is less deep, but I need to get the dent out and will try a dent puller first before commencing work.

Is it possible to fix the scuffs/scratches, and if so, what equipment do I need? From what I’ve read I’ll need filler potentially, primer, sandpaper to go before and during the layers of primer, clear coat and lacquer, plus the paint, which fortunately I can get from manufacturer parts website for £15 although this won’t be age matched, and a microfibre cloth.

I’ve looked at the chipex kit online, would this do the job? I went to Halfords last night but they said they didn’t sell anything that’d help. Slightly confused as they sell a kit ( I think the brand was isopon), plus individually bumper primers, lacquers etc, and they can also do a paint match according to their website. Maybe I just got a fairly clueless staff member….

Any advice would be great regarding products needed, as well as detailed instructions, which would very much appreciated as I have not done anything like this before. My car is red and I have just bought t cut fast red, but appreciate I will probably need more.

If it is nigh on impossible for me to do it myself, any idea how much a bodyshop would charge for it?

Thanks 😊

Chipex is good and pretty easy to use. TBH, without seeing any pics it'll be impossible for any of us to say whether you need to have it done professionally or not or how much is the likely cost.

You are looking to sell your car 4 months ago.... :D

Have you any photos as doing a bad job yourself could devalue your car, leaving it as is saves money, paying a pro means they can colour match exactly to the colour of your car now rather than the original which potentially would be noticeable.

  • Lol, made a typo, meant to say 2020. Any idea how you can put photos up? Tried to, as I know it'd help people gauge the damage

I used to repair and respray cars 35 years ago, but I would not attempt a DIY job today, I certainly wouldn't recommend a DIY first timer to attempt it.

You have to add photos to Imgur, or another photo host, then add the link to your post.

As above, but as you're new you won't be allowed to post links so just post the link without the htttp at the beginning.

I would suggest considering a smart repair quote. Possibly worth waiting until nearer sale time in case any additional scuffs appear....

OP, will it make a difference paying someone to do it? If you pay a few hundred quid to get it fixed and it saves you losing a few hundred quid on sale price, then why bother. Bear in mind, probably no point doing it now if you're going to be driving it for another 8/9 months.

I used ChipsAway a few years ago for scuffs and scratches on my Audi bumper, think it cost about £140ish? 6 or 7 years ago. Very professional job done
