Gas boiler ideas

Options
Moving to quite a large Victorian flat. 4 beds (tho 1 will only be for storage) but other 3 will be used frequently. Big rads in the lounge and a separate gas fire. All other bedrooms have two rads and we'll keep it as that. Bathroom currently electric but en-suite is gas.

Boiler is over 20 years old and definitely needs to be replaced (even mentions needs replacement in the home report). I know it's a bit vague, but what sort of boiler am I looking to buy? For instance, I saw this earlier on eBay and includes Gas Safe installation (they are based in Glasgow where we're moving to):

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Supply-and-installation-of-Vokera-Easi-Heat-Plus-29C-ErP-Combi-Boiler-Gas-safe/264005385896

Would this suffice?

And help would be appreciated. TIA.

With information about the property size so vague it's impossible to say whether or not any specific boiler would do the job. You need to get Gas Safe companies to come in to spec out the requirements and to quote for the work.

Totally agree with the above. Ebay is not the place to use for this, you need someone in to give you proper advice. Personally I don't think a combi boiler in a fully occupied 4 bedroom house is the way forward.

Do you get free quotes for things like that? And then go with the cheapest?

On top of that, 5 years ago my parents quoted by a plumber and it was obvious the boiler was never up to it - obviously we don't want that happening with ourselves.

I put that boiler in rental properties, they are good for about 10 rads. They come with a 5 year warranty but beware that Vokera are stringent when it comes to warranties.

I had one faulty out the box, a leaking heat exchanger and the first thing they did was dip the water for cleanliness. That was before they even knew the problem, I told the warranty people but they don't tell the engineers.

The Ebay ad is also a bit of a scam, they get you interested in the price and when they turn up they add all the extras on that are not included in the price, such as a power flush to get that water clean.

Yikes!! Thanks for the info. Righto, I'll defo have a quote (or 3) when we move in. Found a local place that appears to get very good reviews on google.

    Thanks again for the replies.

The money saving thing is not to replace a boiler until it stops working. Old boilers are generally better made than modern ones, and some go on for decades. Why not go one winter with what is in place? You might get to love it. :)

I have a very old Baxi Burmuda back boiler. Still works, and keeps the place warm. Until such time as it becomes uneconomical to repair, I'll not replace it. Installing a shiny new combi-boiler would save a very small amount on gas, but the savings over a ten year life span would not cover the installation costs.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

I don't think it's a case of whether it's a good enough boiler or not, it's more about whether it's suitable for the OP's needs.

Yes to the first question and a very definite NO to the second one. Ask for references from where they have worked previously for a start. If one quote is a lot less that the rest you need to wonder why they are so much cheaper. Gaining and retaining gas installation qualifications isn't cheap. Particularly for a gas installation of any kind, I would be more interested in the quality of the work than saving a few quid.

Have you seen the sellers name on eBay & he definitely lives up to that if he's recommending a volkera
I'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
