Do not buy the argos simple value suitcase

I needed a suitcase for blackpool so I bought the XL simple value from argos because of the size but the wheels are not strong enough for this size of case. The day I had to the use the suitcase I had to pull it just under 1 mile from my house to the bus stop but within half a mile from my house the wheel fell off so I had to carry the suitcase the rest of the way and then I had to buy another suitcase when I got to blackpool. It looks like people that bought the case after me have had the same problem with the wheels breaking.

  • A suitcase of that size for less than £30 was never going to be of any decent quality and IMO, expecting it to be able to stand up to a 1 mile journey along a pavement is expecting far too much.
Most people would only wheel a case through airports and to/from vehicles and hotels, areas that are generally fairly flat and smooth.
Pavements and roads on the other hand are often very rough with uneven paving slabs, holes, bumps and lots of loose grit that could easily get struck on the wheel axles and cause problems.

Unless Argos state that the item is only suitable for smooth, flat, surfaces, then if the wheels come off the item is not fit for purpose, nor of satisfactory quality.

    Thanks, OP, for the warning.

I remember when wheeled cases first came about - what a revelation! No more having to carry suitcases all the way! :)

Both the previous posters are correct; because there is the law and there is reality. 1mile probably represents the entire distance that most cheap suitcases are wheeled before they break.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

No, you did not buy it because of the size you bought it because it was dirt cheap.

My Tumi bought in 1997 is still fine.

    Satisfactory quality:
The quality of goods is satisfactory if they meet the standard that a reasonable person would consider satisfactory, taking account of—
    (a)any description of the goods,
(b)the price or other consideration for the goods (if relevant), and
(c)all the other relevant circumstances (see subsection (5)).
£30 is about the lowest price that a large suitcase would sell for so its quality would also be very low.

    Fitness for purpose:
fitness for all the purposes for which goods of that kind are usually supplied
Not too many people would usually buy a very cheap suitcase and then wheel it for a mile on pavements and roads.

I bought it so I could put mine and my daughters clothes in so she wouldn't have to pull a suitcase.

I have a Dunlop suitcase that's slightly smaller than the one from argos and I paid less than £30 and it's been up and down the same road 4 time and it haven't broken yet.

Firstly, it isn't the lowest price. You can get a large wheeled case for ~ £20. Thus this one was 50% more than the cheapest. That's a not insignificant increase.

Even if it were the cheapest, you seem to be suggesting that people can sell things that are not fit for purpose just because they are cheap. This is not the case.

    Oh dear.

You really do talk some utter piffle.

And, as usual, you don't read earlier posts in the thread properly before wading in to defend people providing shoddy good or services or trying to dupe people with dodgy terms and conditions.

If you had read the thread properly, you would have seen that the wheel fell of after half a mile.

Applying a little critical thought to the situation, we would observe that given that someone undertaking a trip would need to use the case at each end, in each direction - i.e. 4 sections. That means that this case would not have managed a return trip with 200 metre's use there and back at each end!

And as for you imputation that anyone could wriggle out of the 'satisfactory quality' requirement because a purchaser used a wheeled case on a road or pavement, it beggars belief that anyone could suggest something so absurd.

I think some of these replies are nothing short of rubbish.

The suitcase wheels should not fall off.

And to say it was designed for terminal buildings only and not pavements. H E L L O ?

Spain has pavements too, like Blackpool.

Argos has changed somewhat since supermarket bought it in terms of range and quality.
