Crackling noise from landline

Terrible crackling noise from landline. Can still hear the cracklings when I did the silent test line on main socket 17070 opt 2? I also rang 151 and another line test was done and no fault was found. The cracklings sounds were so bad Incould hardly hear the automated voice. I understand if the crackling noise can still be heard from the main socket during a silent test then the fault is not in my premises and I will not be charged. Thanks

This can be caused by faulty microfilters.

it sounds like you have a bad connection causing the crackle. what type of main socket do you have and have you tested from the test socket in the back of the master socket with all your extensions and phones unplugged. if you have done this and the line is still noisy then you may have a line fault

a noisy line will not show up when a line test is carried out hence they are saying there is no fault

you will need to book a visit form openreach through your service provider

as for getting charged for the repair then that will depend on what has caused the fault and where the fault location is so we cant answer that question

It’s the test port behind the removable consumer panel of the master socket that should be used, to eliminate any potential problem with extension wiring or extension sockets, plus the test should be done with a known working phone, at the moment you haven’t really proven anything at all...I would try your phone on a friend, neighbour or relative’s line or borrow their phone and try it on your line ( in the test port of course ) if after doing this you still get a noisy line, then report it, but reporting it now before any conclusive test has been done and it was shown that it was your own phone instrument that had developed a fault and it was that that caused the noise on the line, it’s probable that OR would charge your provider for the unnecessary visit and then your provider would charge you

Candlebreeze - try a couple of different telephones in the master socket. If the crackle is the same, then you know your handset is fine. Then contact your phone provider who will sort out a visit from Openreach. Normally, if the fault is with something on the line outside, up to and including the master socket, the repair is free. If the fault is on your side, there'll be a charge. Had my line fixed a couple of times - first time the line from the house to the nearest telegraph pole was repaired, second time there was some sort of fault with a fuse on the telegraph pole. OR can be busy so wait times can be long, but both mine done inside a week.

Have contacted bt. Engineer came and did some tests inside and outside and inside said they need to dig and repair the fault outside on their network. He explained the problem but could not understand what it is. Same thing happened years ago where they have to dig on the pavement. Strange enough even the work has not been done the cracklings noise seem to have improved. I can actually have a decent phone conversation
