from hospital. My son is 3 years old.
Max was ok during the day, he was just normal..then at 9pm i went upstairs as him and erin were still messing about and i noticed he had a bad throat so brought him downstairs and gave him tixilix and some snuggle babe on his chest. He fell asleep on settee..
Me and paul went bed at 1130 and carried him up and put him in his own bed..at about 1230 he woke and it sounded like he couldnt breath and sounded to me like croupe. So i rang pauls mum and she came at 12.50am and got me to hospital..we was waiting in waiting room for about 30secs (we were only ones in) as its a very small hospital. They put us in the childrens bit and told him to lie on bed which he did. Then she said we just going to take him to where there is some more equipment because of his breathing..so off we walked to this room..only to find it was resuition unit, as soon as i saw the sign on door i panicked. We went in and it was horrible. They led him on this bed put a thing on his finger and doc came said it was brontruitus so they gave him a oxygen mask. I was nearly crying. Max was calm tho. The guy in next bed to max was havin trouble breathing..it was horrible. Anyways next thing he said max would have to stay in so they took us back to the childrens bit still with oxygen mask, but i think if he'd of had to have more things on him id of walked out i just wouldnt be able to cope. Anyway then he started having difficulty breathing again (he was using his stomach to help him breathe) so another doc came in and said he had croupe and he has to have steriods whoch he has now had. and that he could go home. So he is now led next to me in bed pauls in his bed. His breathing is so loud, it was quiet at hospital in the end as soon as we got outside he started again. Im wide awake. scared to sleep. It sounds like he cant breathe but he can doc said thats croupe for you. I have to book doc appointment for friday to see if he any better and health vistor due tomo anyways. I feel so helpless but doc said he should be ok in day like theres nothing wrong with him, its just nighttime is the worste time.
Omg i have talked to much lol

Sorry to hear about your son - I would have felt exactly the same. The first time Ryan got croup (not as severely as your son had it, from the sound of it) I thought he was dying and I called an ambulance!
It's horrible to hear them like that.
With Ryan, cooling him right down seems to work - if he gets it during the night, I bring him downstairs and open the windows.
Hope your son feels better today. xxx"I wasn't wrong, I just wasn't right enough.":smileyhea97800072589250 -
So sorry to hear about your little boy it must have been very scary.
When my little girl gets colds she gets horrible chesty ones and always sounds like she is struggling to breathe. Panics me everytime, I just lay there unable to sleep checking on her constantly.
Hope he feels much better today.Proud to be dealing with my debts - DFW No: 712

Please try not to panic - your little one will react by being more frightened himself and this will exacerbate his struggle to breathe.
My daughter used to get croup all the time when she was little - it sounds much more worrying than it actually is. We used to find having some moisture in the air helped.
She now 23 and still, when she gets a bad cold, she gets the croupy cough - it sounds dreadful, but it will pass.I let my mind wander and it never came back!0 -
Well i thought u suppose to keep them cold. but hos said to keep him warm and to use steamSealed Pot dec 08 - dec 09 so far £27.67, Live off £4k Spent £330.20 GC £1,200 for 2009 Spent £50.78 PaD so far £650.07Debts: L/woods £154.00 C/One PAID O/D £649.90 Next £299.95 O/D PAID Gas £72.60 Electric £155.73 Mum £640.00 Orange £490.320

My little one had croup as well, he still gets it at times and it really does make you panic. I find that keeping them in the bathroom doors and windows close and running the hot water helps, not very mse! Hugs to you both. What goes around - comes around

Goodness me, I hope your little boy is feeling better soon. All sounds very scary. Can't add any helpful tips as I don't have any children, but I'm not looking forward to this part of it as I am trying for one. Eek. Let us know how he is!Pink Sproglettes born 2008 and 2010

Hi mumzy, I presume he had dexamethasone medicine or a pulmicort nebuliser. They both last about 8 hours and sometimes need repeating, if he is still croupy take him back to the hospital and get him another dose.He should really have stayed in for at least 6 hours monitoring as it is common for croup to recur once medicine has worn off. Also give him calpol for sore throat from cough, and ?temperature.but I repeat if he is still croupy take him back to hospital, steam helps a bit from what you have said it sounds like he needs more medication, dexamethasone has better results.
More often than not croup can be cured quite easily but occaisonally it becomes more serious.
Dont be afraid of the equipment, it is there to help and quite often children are put in resus area just because they are children and can get sick quicker than an adult who can tell you how bad they feel, children get sicker quicker but also recover quicker.
It is the croup season at the moment. The cold damp weather makes it worse.0 -
MY youngest used to get croup a lot up until he was about 3 or 4 (now age 19 and 6' tall).
His bedroom is quite small and I was advised to boil a kettle and let the steam circulate with the door and windows shut (obviously with me in there as well), which worked every time. Many nights I had the phone in hand and had dialled 2 of the 9s, but never got to the third-he always started to come out of the worst of it after about 10 mins of steam. It's much worse for the parent - my son has no memory of it all.
You did the right thing taking him to hospital; the GP may prescribe asthma medicine for him (they did for my son) as these include steroids.
Good luck0 -
