Damaged baggage with Ryan air

Hi,

I’m writing because I need help with a compensation claim from Ryanair for damaged baggage.

My stroller was missing a wheel on its return to the baggage hall. I submitted the claim along with original receipt copies. The item is worth circa £770. Ryan air have responded offering a goodwill gesture of Euro 20 as they say the item is over 3 years old.

Does anyone know how this is supposed to work? It seems completely unreasonable to offer such a paltry sum when they take responsibility for our items in their care and they have left me without my (previously) fully functioning stroller! Am I really expected to accept this? I thought I had rights under the Montreal convention.

The added problem I have is that I could claim through travel insurance but they limit each item payout to £500 so I’m still out of pocket that way.

Any advice or previous experience would be much appreciated.

have you contacted the manufacturer and asked about a new wheel and cost of repair
note: I don't believe Ryanair have their own baggage handlers so the damage will likely have been airport baggage handlers either at departure or arrival airport

You say the item is worth circa £770....is that for a second hand over 3 year old stroller or are you saying it was worth circa £770 when it was brand new? have you looked at costs of second hand ones?
  • No one is going to give you what you paid for it unless you've got a new for old policy, but their offer sounds derisory. Cant you get it repaired as opposed to replaced? What did their terms and conditions say about damaged luggage when you read them?

a £500 excess on a travel insurance policy I assume brought the price of the policy down but not much use if you need to make a claim.

The OP didn't say there's a £500 excess, single item payout is limited to £500.

It is merely a missing wheel?

Surely you can get a new one and put it on? or is there further damage beyond the wheel. Even so it should be repairable.

I've had suitcases damaged before and I keep receipts for this reason.
Last time they collected the case, fixed it and brought it back again.

Why I spent <£20 on a travel bag for my stroller. They have lots of bits that can easily get caught whilst going through the baggage system yet parents always seem amazed when they arrive on the baggage carousel with parts broken and missing.
