DS is eldest of 2, so no experience of collecting GCSE results since I collected mine *cough* years ago.

It seems we'll be shoehorning in the holiday between the youth camp the kids go on each year and results collection day. Glad I asked before I booked!

    Thanks all

Think carefully before deciding, this is your sons future you are playing with for the sake of a cheap holiday. You don't have to collect the results in person they can be posted to you. However be fully aware of the admissions policy of his chosen further education establishment. College enrolment date is usually the day of or the day after results day. There is little point in him achieving his best results if he misses out on the course/subjects of his choice.

Can you really not pull that holiday earlier a week.

Whichever College your child applies for they will get an interview usually shortly after the GCSE's finish. Your given an offer of courses & you accept or not pending results. You are then given an enrolment date. This is usually right at the very end of August ...a friend is away with her child this year and doesn't get back to August 27th...the college she's applied to is aware of this and she has an interview the day after she gets back.
Oh and last year at my sons school you either collected the results or they got emailed after lunch on results day.

If you decide to go away after the exams please be aware that the exam boards have a contingency day right at the end of the exam period, in case there is any reason they can't run an exam on the correct day. This year it was on 26th June. Not every school tells the students about this. Although it's unlikely that it will be used it might be wise not to book a holiday until after this date, just in case something happens and you child needs to go in on this day to take an exam.

As he's not going straight into the school 6th form and may need to contact the college regarding results I think you will need to make sure your holiday doesn't clash with it.

When I got mine we were on holiday so I missed out on the experience of all picking the results up and comparing them and that sort of thing. I came home to an envelope, took it straight into the toilet with me to open alone.....cried. Then had to come out and show my parents my crap results! 23 years ago, still remember it so vividly.

I work for a 6th form college and we interview 95% of our students between Easter and the beginning of June about their course choices. We enroll on results day and the following day and any student who was not available on those days we would expect to have informed us ahead of time. Problems arise when students don't get the results they expect, especially in English or Math, as this can restrict their A Level choices.

I would find out if he can get his GCSE results online, quite a few of the exam boards do this now.
Make sure you go to the open evenings for all the 6th form colleges he is interested in and ask what their procedures are for enrollment if he wont be in the country.
Most importantly I would be asking DS if they really don't want to be collecting their results and enrolling themselves.
  • This seems awfully unfair on your son

If it all goes pear shaped for your son, surely he would be better off being on the spot at home where between you, you are more likely to be able to sort things out.

This is such a crucial decision time for him. Why risk potentially ruining his future just because you want some cheaper sun and sangria. I personally wouldn't risk it. Save the cheaper deals until the children are set on their chosen paths and than yiu can go away with a clear conscience.
  • We were on holiday until the day before the GCSE results. We went up to the school with my son to collect them and it is not a moment I would have wanted to miss. To see him with his friends supporting and congratulating each other was very special. Your son may not have thought about it much at the moment but nearer the time might not want to be away.
