HSBC Refund Letter

Hi,

I’m hoping you can help.

I recently received a letter from HSBC saying I may be due a refund but need to confirm details.

This account has not been active/used for about 6/7 years. Unfortunately at the time it was in its overdraft by quite a large amount and was left this way.

Do you think there is a genuine refund or are the having a last ditch attempt to chase up the debt?

Would you take the refund if they wave your debt?

It's very unlikely that a high street bank would "invent" a refund in order to catch out a non-paying customer, and there are circumstances in which legislation forces them to offer refunds to customers (e.g. if they have failed to provide statements with the necessary frequency). So it is ~probably~ genuine.

However, their T&Cs will almost certainly allow them to offset.
