Advice on leak in bathroom sink

Had a new bathrooom fitted just over a year ago.
This weekend I had a blockage in the sink - I have a wall mounted sink with what I believe is a bottle trap.
To remove the blockage a friend undid the bottle trap and release the blockage. After screwing the bottle trap together again we have now found there is a leak and on closer inspection my friend informed me there is no O-ring and to fix the leak I would need to get one.
I guess i’m asking if my friend is right? Should there have been an o-ring there in the first place?
Just need some guidance so I know what to ask for.

Most will have an O ring. If it had been leak free for a year(?) it sounds like your friend lost it / forgot to refit it.
You might find it difficult to source the correct replacement O ring but the traps are not expensive and can be bought at any plumbers merchant. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kitchen-Sink-U-Bend-P-Trap-Waste-76mm-Seal-1-1-2-1-5INCH-40mm-43mm-Outlet/281382978609?epid=14012068872&hash=item4183bb8431:g:ElIAAOSwuxFYuDmK"A nation's greatness is measured by how it treats its weakest members." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

They assured me the O-ring had not come off when they took it apart and flushed contents down the loo.
They thought that it might be because it was a sealed unit from manufactures and as this was the first time it had been opened it may never have had one.
Looks a bit like this (can’t work out how to add a picture) - not plastic.

A set of seals and o rings for bottle traps is available from Screwfix for less than £2.
A bathroom hand basin is likely to be 32mm so this kit should do:-

However, check first as there is a slight possibility it may be 40mm waste in which case you'd need this kit:-

Although the ones I posted are for the plastic traps, we cross posted.
They might or might not fit.0 -
It'll be 32mm or 1 1/4" in old money, if it didn't leak before he has lost the washerI'm only here while I wait for Corrie to start.
You get no BS from me & if I think you are wrong I WILL tell you.0
