How long do direct debits take to show in Tesco bank?

I'm using my Tesco bank to switch to Barclays and get the Barclays switch payment.
The switch date is soon so i've just logged on to check everything is A-ok at Tesco end. I set up 3 direct debits just in case. TV Licence went no problem as did a credit card. My Post Office savings account is different though.

When i go to manage payments, the two that went ok are listed but the post office savings is showing as cancelled in June.
Yet when i log in to my post office savings account the direct debit has been taken on the 1st of August, the linked account is my Tesco account & the amount it was set up for has been credited to my post office savings account.

So what gives?

I think the chances are that what you have set up is a standing order rather than a direct debit. Can you see this on your Tesco account. I don't think you can set up a direct debit to another bank (or post office) savings account as direct debits work by the receiving bank "asking" for the money. A standing order works by you (your bank) sending the monies to the recipient. I think what many others do is to set up a small charitable direct debit to satisfy the conditions. I'm sure someone more expert will be along soon.

I take it the money hasnt come out of your tesco account?
If so the PO transaction will reverse in a few days.

Ive had similar issues with the PO.

The very first DD you set up needs to be a regular payment with an end date several years in the future.

If you set up a regular DD with say an end date of the next month, any subsequent DD's will fail if they happen after the initial end date. As the PO have told your bank to stop them after that date, but dont inform them of any new ones. For some reason the DD isnt an open ended date, the PO are an absolute joke.

Oops - sorry. I totally misread your post and thought you were talking about brand new DDs, not ones that had worked in the past. That's interesting about the PO savings account DD though as I was looking at setting one up. Thanks.
  • Technically it is a brand new one.

I had it set up & it worked (100% direct debit & not a standing order - set up on the post office's end).
Tesco changed their interest rate so the direct debit got cancelled.

Later on i then go to set up a new direct debit as i prepare for the switch. Again - from the post office end, so a direct debit. Even says that on my statement.

Now i can't honestly say if i was asked for an end date or not. Some times i have been whereas other times i haven't (i just say it's for X-amount to be taken monthly & the PO appear to put it in place 'forever'). However in the case where it forces me to enter a specific date, i always always ALWAYS enter it for a couple years down the line, just to play safe.

Hope this helps to clarify anything.

If youve cancelled it, then set a new one up its similar to what happened with me.
In that mine expired but when I tried to set a new one up, the PO seemingly refusing to send the new mandate off so they just kept failing. In the end I just opened a new PO saver, and closed the old one as it was now impossible to deposit money.

  • UPDATE....

New question is who is my complaint now to be directed at ... Tesco bank or Post Office?

I've now got an entry in my post office savings with a charge due to an unpaid direct debit. Ok the charge is only £1.00 but that's really not the point.

The money was in my Tesco current account, easily enough money.

My guess is the complaint lies with Tesco?
If so then the account is being switched but today should be the completion date. Will this change anything? I'm guessing not & that the complaint still is with Tesco?

    Hmm i never got charged.
The fault lies with PO, but they'll look at it, and say it wasnt their fault.
    Thats what happened with me.
  • Turns out it's not a charge, it's just a returned D/D. My misreading of it.

Phoned both. Apparently it's with Tesco's end & simply due to the fact i am switching the account. The switch was initiated 31st July and the first D/D payment was scheduled for 1st Aug. If it had been scheduled for 30th July i'd have been fine.
