Going into employment 4 days before car insurance expires

So I'm unemployed at the moment, and that's specified on my car insurance policy (as well as social use only)

I now accepted a job offer and start on the 7th, but my car insurance policy ends on the 12th.

Will I be OK buying new insurance from the 12th, with update info, and leaving my existing one? Just wondering because esure charge £26 to make changes to the policy.

What if I don't make any changes, but I don't use my car for commuting until the 12th?

How much NCB do you have?
If full, or 5yrs plus, I would just start a new one on the 7th IF you need commuting and tell the other one you are not renewing with them.
If you don't need to use it for work then just get a quote/policy with your new employment status.

Good luck with your new job.

    Thanks for the reply.

I have 5 years NCB, it would be 6 on renewal.

Didn't realise I could have 2 policies at once. Would I need to declare 5 years instead of 6 on the new one though?

Your not covered for commuting. Just take public transport for a few days.

You have zero no claims for the new policy its already in use.

Speak to them. Tell them you're starting a job.
They might waive the fee for the change as they're aware it's going to happen shortly after renewal. (although the actual insurance may be more expensive if you were doing everything online, but now have to talk to an advisor).
Had no fees before with a number plate change when I told my insurer it was happening in advance.

When I changed cars, it was within the last 28 days before renewal so there was no charge. Give your insurer a call and see what they say.

    Thanks for the replies.

I was just worried about ringing them because then they might say "well you have to pay the fee because now you've told us, we'll report you if you don't" or something along those lines.

I've done a comparison and I found it much cheaper with another provider so I don't want to be forced into staying with them either.

If you leave before the end of the year you cannot claim that year as NCD as you didn’t complete it.
Having said that the difference between 5 and 6 is minimal and in some companies max is 5 anyway.
You’d also need your last renewal notice showing 5 years. Do you have that?

You implied you could get to work another way.
Could you do that for a couple of days?

    Yea that's possible.

Would I still be covered driving elsewhere, despite having my occupation listed as unemployed?

If you don't tell the whole truth to your insurer then theres a chance you could have trouble if you claim.
Anecdotally I've never heard of insurers checking employment status before, so that would be unlikely, but I can't guarantee it won't happen.

    Your options are:
    1) Get your insurance updated for 4 dates and pay the admin fee.
    2) Start a new overlapping policy and lose 1 years NCD (this assumes you have the renewal notice showing 5 years NCD). Youll be 1 year behind going forward bu incremental discounts are low or non-existent after 5.

    3) If you want to be really safe, then get your shopping in, stay at home or get public transport, walk, cycle, get a lift for 4 days.

Personally I'd be tempted to do 3) if that is possible for you without massive increased cost/inconvenience.

Thanks. I ended up ringing them, and he said he's made the changes. There was no fee since I'm in the renewal period. However, now my policy is showing that it ends on the 6th (tomorrow) so I have no idea what he's actually done.

Need to ring them back tomorrow
