So that they aren't responsible for paying out the full value of your possessions if something happens?

You can take it or leave it. If you leave it then you have to find someone with different terms.
  • Do they actually *require* you to take insurance with them or imply you do to make a sale, when actually you can take insurance out with a 3rd party?

You're definitely required to have insurance but there are third parties like Surewise who provide compliant cover with many storage facilities for a fraction of the price. It's likely your facility will either accept your Surewise cover or price match it with their own insurance - contact Surewise, or another self storage insurance firm, to confirm compliance and then contact your facility to discuss what i've just said.

So they can make more money out of you.

If there's a loss caused by their negligence, they'd be liable anyway, whether or not you have insurance. And they'll already have their own insurance against that sort of liability.

It ought to up to the customer whether they want to insure against risks which aren't the storage company's liability.

Vincent. You say 'You're definitely required to have insurance'. This is not so. The storage company say this so they can sell you insurance. They say their reason is because they are members of the Storage Association and it is required by them. However I have spoken to the Association and they reluctantly admitted it is not mandatory but recommended. Looking at the specially designed metal storage spaces with doors that facilitate for sturdy padlocks and security key fobs for entry and daytime reception staff, it seems to me unless one is storing gold bullion it should be safe enough to store ones general belongings without insurance. Which is what I am doing and I do not have sleepless nights. Thank you for responding and I understand why you say one has to have insurance because that is what we are told. Thank you.
