Mortgage protection insurance

Mortgage protection insurance taken out with mortgage early 2003. Was told that we needed it and was compulsory halifax mortgage in bank advisor. Never received any paperwork, never did until making a claim in mid 2013, due to the fact that halifax was using previous address. Carers responsibility claim, only one year of cover, thought it was supposed to be two as that is what the advisor told us when taking the mortgage out. Have been caring ever since and paying this policy ever since. Yearly paperwork has now started coming to my address but still has a mixture of this address and my former address. Recently been told should not be paying for this policy has will never be able to make a claim on it unless back in work. Also thought it had critical cover turns out it did not.
How would i word my claim? Wrong advice? Not having had any look at the original paperwork? Still paying for something that halifax no i am no longer covered? All of the above?
All help appreciated, as never done anything like this.

And how would you evidence this supposed wrong advice... you would be better trying to make a claim for premiums paid after your carer cover finished on basis that as you never returned to work you were now paying for a policy that you would no longer be able to claim from (no transfer of risk).
Think it would be highly unlikely you would get a refund of all premiums if you went done the mis-sold route... also keep in mind any successful mis-sale complaint would have any successful claims deducted i.e. you year of carers cover.0
