Hi
On my return flight from Asia to the UK.

I have option of either a 19 hour layover from 10am to next day departure 7am.

Or I can extend my stopover for an extra 1 night, give me 2 nights.

What is the best place to stay in Dubai for a cheap stopover, near transfer, metro station and sights?
Is it easy to get around Central Dubai as a tourist? Is it expensive out there?

thanks

If there's no shorter connection available you may be entitled to free hotel accommodation from the airline, presumably Emirates. However it may be allocated somewhere near the airport, perhaps limiting or preventing your opportunity for a foray into an Islamic concrete jungle.

Dubai airport isn't that far from the main city, and taxis are SO cheap. If you want to purchase a drink in your hotel look for a licensed hotel, not many are licensed to sell alcohol. The big ones usually are (Crowne Plaza, Four Points by Sheraton.etc).

I went to Dubai on a stopover and it was an nice little trip, went to the malls, did a bus tour, went to a waterpark...

I stayed in the Crown Plaza Festival City. It's a bit of a taxi ride from the main areas in Dubai, but closer to the airport. I also stayed once in a smaller hotel and no taxi driver knew where it was! So I would stay in a big hotel if I were you.
  • We’re recently had a 17 hour stop over and stayed as a family of 4at the jumeirah creekside. I think they do a 24 hour room ( so you can check in as soon as you arrive and 24 hours starts at that point.) we got a taxi from the airport which was about £10 and return was £5. What was great about the hotel was free access to wild wadi water park. There’s a shuttle bus, but we got a taxi. It was a great way to spend a few hours. Would highly recommend. In my opinion 19 hours is enough!
  • The other thing to add is if you are flying with emirates and the stopover is less than 24 hours you can check your luggage straight through and just keep hand baggage for the stay in Dubai.

Thanks for the tips, very useful. I am not interested in malls or water parks. Local spice markets and guess architecture, history is my thing.

When will you travel as the heat may limit what you want to do?
