Does any company stop you doing this? I can't see why they'd want to put obstacles in your way.

Some only limit number of Regular Savers or Current Accounts, so perfectly feasible

Fair point. Fixed term deposits tend not to be loss leaders though in the way that RSs or interest-paying current accounts are, so I don't think there's any institution that meaningfully restricts them. (They might have a maximum deposit rule, but it's generally in the millions.)

OK, to prove myself wrong, some are in the £200-250k ballpark, and they might try to apply that across multiple accounts.

Dunno if they still do, but Halifax had limits on number of fixed rate bonds you could have as they stopped me once from opening a new one when I had a few on the go (back in the day when I kept things simple having cash all in one place)
  • Thanks folks. I think the idea of a rolling bond ladder is a pretty good one although I'm not sure I'd go as far as 24 separate accounts. Perhaps 4 with maturities spaced every 6 months and then 6-8 months living expenses in easy access.

One other thing is I think it's important both my OH and I have a small separate emergency fund in our own names so we aren't completely dependent on joint accounts for emergency living costs.
