How to record from Sky Box?

Apart from using a DVD recorder, is there any other way to record from a Sky box? I wish to keep a local news story and will no longer be a Sky customer in a few weeks.

There is no built-in way short of using the Copy feature with an external DVD recorder connected to the SCART output.

Personally I wouldn't point a smartphone at the screen, just look at YouTube at people who've done that with the end result looking horrible, just horrible, please don't do it.

I would Google "frame grabber sky", and it will probably come up with ideas and methods

Companies that grab tv signals and often stream them live may have equipment affiliated with SiliconDust. Perhaps not the home version that you will fine, bur multi channel to ip stuff. Worth putting "SiliconDust sky" into google too

I have used two methods successfully on a Sky+ HD box. I have no knowledge of Sky Q.

One involves removing the disk from the Sky box and the other requires buying or borrowing equipment.

This might not be worth it for a one off programme segment.

1) If the programme isn't encrypted you can remove the disk, mount it in a USB caddy and use ExPVR to extract the programme on your PC and then use a video editor to edit the section you want. Removing the disk is easier than you might think but does require some fiddly work. This method doesn't work with encrypted content and most Sky programmes are encrypted.

2) I have a HDMI splitter that strips out the copy protection on encrypted content. I use this with a Hauppauge HD PVR2 video capture device to record to my laptop.

Neither of these methods are illegal in law but almost certainly violate your Sky contract. Whether you are much bothered by that is your decision. I'm not as everything I do is for my own personal use.

Strictly speaking on Sky+HD the box is yours, do what you want with it and has been since you joined. If it's out of warranty which they probably all will be by now, take it apart to your heart's content.

SkyQ is a different kettle of fish - you don't own the box, it's Sky's property and you must send it back when your services end.
