Card Protection 3 yearly £70.00 fee, fuming!

Options
Ok, years and years ago I was probably called up randomly and succumbed to 'purchasing' this cardholder protection thing for 3 years or so (we're talking 2001 I think).
So, this is linked to my Barclays account and barclaycard that I had. It was all in my maiden name at my old address.
Today I logged onto online banking and discovered to my horror that 'Card Protection' had withdrawn the £70.00 fee from my account, which then gave me another charge of ya normal sinly £30.00 (good old barclays ) cos I get paid in the next few days so only had a few quid left in my account.
I called up Barclays to ask what on earth it was cos I just had no idea whatsoever and was FURIOUS!!!
I was then, to cut story short, put through to this cardholder protection company who explained that I had this policy and to confirm my details, which I did.......but they were wrong! Oh, cos, hmmmm, I'm now at a different address, and I'm married

When I told them I hadn't received anything in the post for, oh god, ever, it seems  they said that it was my responsibility to inform them of my marriage and address change, but then how the hell did they manage to withdraw money from my account that is now in a different name?

I said very clearly that I did not want this policy anymore, that I was absolutely furious and for the money to be refunded into my account, as well as the £30.00 charge, to which she said that the £70.00 would be credited within the next 7-10 days and I would then have to ask my bank for the 'charge back!'

Anyone experience similar and is there anything else I can do?
I'm livid that they took this money and I have a relative living in my old address so I'm certain that no correspondence has been sent, as I would have received it by now.

Anyone offer any advice?
Thanks in advance

  • Yep, had exactly the same problem, my "policy" was taken out in 2001 with barclays, to be honest i had forgotten about it, apparently it renews its self every three years. Its only because i have reguarly keeping on top of my statements that i noticed a £70 charge being taken out, any how i asked to cancel the policy, which they told me 7 - 10 days.

Probably because they had hold of your a/c number that they were able to take the payments on a continous authority basis, regardless of your name change.

I did get my money back in the end, and can't help you with the charges i'm afraid.

I just recieved a reminder for this through the post. Back in 2005 i only paid £35 for 3 years cover. Now they want to charge me £70. I do like the peace of mind having this protection but does anyone know of any alternative protection programs which are just as good and/or cheaper than the Barclays one.

    Thanks

When I got the reminder for my policy I phoned and said I did not require it anymore. Ok, no problem we will cancel it for you they said. A month later the money was taken out of my account. £50, I was not happy. Went into the halifax to get my money refunded under the DD guarantee. The woman was very nice telling me how stupid some of the call centres are and can they not get anything right. Her face was a picture when she asked me to confirm the amount and who had taken the money when they should not have done I had to tell her it was the Halifax who had taken the money.
