Student temporary car insurance

My son passed his test this week and I’d like to be able to get him temporary insurance before he goes off to Uni in September. However, the providers of short term insurance (like Daysure, Bewise) will only insure drivers who have been driving for 6 months and others (Marmalade) will only insure if the car is worth more than £2k.
The cost of adding him as a driver on my policy is huge and not worth it because he’ll only drive in the holidays. So I’m hoping someone has had the same experience and can advise me of the best thing to do.
Thanks

See how much it will cost to add him to your policy just for the holidays0

As above, you can ask for a quote for adding him as a temp driver from now until September (and plan to add him as a temp driver during other holidays).
But check if there's a limit on the number of days a temp driver can be added to your policy during a policy year (I recall my policy had a limit of 90 days).
And with my insurer, it actually worked out cheaper overall just to add him as a permanent named driver, than to repeatedly add him as a temp driver.0 -
We use Veygo.com from admiral. They will cover 17 years old who have just passed their test but it's car sharing insurance so you can't use it on there own car. It's more for adding them on your own car.0

Admiral have a category 'car-at-home, student-away-at-uni', which keeps them insured when they are at home in the holidays or occasional visits, but not to take the car with them to uni.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Hi All,
I've just phoned up Admiral and they have never heard of this type of policy, do you have any more details?
I'm in a similar situation; two kids at uni using bikes and they will be coming home at Christmas and as we live in the middle of nowhere, they really need a car/motorbike.
I think the insurance companies are missing a great opportunity here.0
