Toilet Seat Fittings/Replacement

Hello everyone, good evening.

I've not had any luck so far browsing this topic so thought I'd ask.

One of my fittings on my back to the wall toilet came loose, and the nut fell off - it was a bottom fixing inside the pan. Unfortunately, the pipes in the back are too tight to replace the nut, which has now rolled out of sight and reach.

This (I think) leaves me with two options:
1) replace the whole seat and fixing (least preferred)
2) replace the bottom fixings on both sides with a top fixing that is also vertical hinge, so it should fit the same seat? (most preferred)

2) is preferred as it will hopefully be a lot cheaper, but are these fixings universal? Or will I need a new seat?

For reference, the toilet is a Porcelanosa Urban C square, which is backed right into a wall, sealed at wall and floor.

Any steer is Appreciated!

Thank you,

TH

I don't understand from your description, a photo might help.
A magnetic stick might help your recover that lost nut. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Silverline-151211-Magnetic-Telescopic-Pick-Up/dp/B001C7NN86/ref=sr_1_2?keywords=magnetic+probe&qid=1564700210&s=gateway&sr=8-2

  • A magnetic stick may help get the nut, yes but then I still can't attach it to the screw at the end of the fixing - it's inside the pan and in an incredibly tight space.

Can't post links yet, sorry :(

    Thank you

Not sure if this would be suitable, but you can get what they call "blind hole" fixings. It's a rubber sleeve that you push into the hole, then when you screw in the bolt the sleeve expands and holds the fixing in place. There's no nut on the bottom.

Here's just one example - there's any number of variations available online, or from DIY sheds, Screwfix, etc. etc.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/YiGo-Toilet-Hinge-Fixings-Screw/dp/B01N35P3GD

It might not be suitable for your particular design, but if it will work then it's a very cheap fix.
  • I think blind hole designs must be what I'm after, they look suitable. I need one with vertical protrusions (which join seat to fixing) which I found on amazon after your link, are the vertical parts always compatible?

    Thank you,

    TH

It's impossible to say for certain, however there do tend to be a smallish range of standard fixing systems, if that makes sense ? So odds on it'll fit, as long as the method of fixing is the same. Sorry I can't be more definitive ! But if you Google for "Blind hole fixings" you'll get dozens of variations on the theme - if you're lucky, some might specify the dimensions (particularly length and diameter). Or, if all else fails, take the seat with you into B&Q, Wickes, local plumbers merchant, wherever, where you'll be able to try the fixing for size. Or, for what they cost, you could take a punt on Amazon on one that looks about right, on the basis that it's only a couple of quid even if it doesn't fit. Not quite MSE, I know, but ..... :-)
  • A day out with the seat is probably best, yes. Thank you very much for your assistance.

That's true. There are tons various guides online like this https://sanitaryreview.com/category/how-to/ or this https://www.wikihow.life/Install-a-New-Toilet-Seat which are really helpful especially when you do repairs by yourself.

Also search for top fixing. https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=toilet+top+fixing&_sop=15

Size of the hole in the pan is important.
