Changes I need to clarify, HELP!

Hi

My son finished his A levels last month so now my child tax credit and child benefit has stopped.

I spoke to a benefit advisor about a benefit my son could get while he is looking for a job.
She asked what benefits I was on so I told her, as I’m disabled I get PIP and ESA, I also get the severe disability premium, she told me that now my son, who is 18 and now not in full time education, he is classed as a non dependent and him living here with me as a non dependent means I will lose the severe disability premium part of my PIP?! Is this right? I can’t find any information about this.
Thanks in advance
Amelie

Yes, i'm afraid you will lose the SDP because your son is no longer a dependent, unless he claims a qualifying benefit himself, such as PIP daily living or DLA mid/high rate care.

Any housing benefit you claim won't be affected because of your PIP claim.

    Did they answer this part?
  • He can get universal credit while he’s looking for a job

That's correct, he'll receive the under 25 standard allowance of £251.77 per month.

No mention of the Carer Addition in UC or Carers Allowance for him?
  • If he applies for carers allowance my pip/Esa would be changed over to universal credit we found out so we’d be worse off but now he’s going to have to move out so I don’t lose my severe disability premium, seems crazy because even though I need him due to my actual severe disabilities, him being here is going to put a big dent in my benefit I need to live on!?
    Does bedroom tax still apply?

Who told you that if he applies for Carers Allowance then you would move to UC? That's terrible advice and totally incorrect.

Your son claiming benefits will have no impact on your benefits because it's to completely separate claims.

May i ask where he would go if he moves out? It's not easy for anyone to find somewhere to live, much less someone that's so young and single, with no job.

Bedroom tax only applies if you're renting from housing association, it doesn't apply if you're privately renting.

So you are going to chuck your son out purely so you don't lose your sdp. There was me thinking parents should help their children. Where exactly would he live?

As already said, if your son claims UC he will get the standard allowance of £251.77. If he cares for you he can also get the carer element of £160.20. This brings his monthly amount to £411.97/month.

    Your SDP is worth £285/month.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.

I’m not chucking my son out just to keep my sdp! I was asking for clarification on this information I was given.
I don’t want him to leave, not only do I like him being here, I need him, I’m blind in one eye and severely sighted in the other eye and due to a brain bleed and resulting stroke I have a various array of disabilities. I’d chose him over money anyway.

As for the losing the sdp while a non dependent advisor told me this.
CAB told me I’d be changed from pip/Esa if he claims carers allowance.
