Dodgy purchase

I bought something on Ebay which I never received. Ebay state that before they will reimburse any money lost I should contact my credit card company since both Mastercard and Visa may guarantee payments made. I've searched online but can find no reference to this. Does anyone know if it's the case? I paid £150, via PayPal, with a Mastercard.

    Buying Goods from Retailers :

    ....
    Pay on a credit card.
Pay for goods worth over £100 even partially on a credit card and the credit card company is equally liable with the retailer; this gives you a second bite at the complaining cherry. This does not work with debit cards though (as this stems from Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 and is about 'credit giving' cards).

This used to be valuable protection if you’re buying goods abroad as it’s much easier to take a claim against the credit card company than a foreign company. Unfortunately a recent court ruling (discuss it) means it no longer applies to goods bought abroad. This ruling is likely to be appealed on challenge by the OFT, and some cards are still honouring it in the meantime.
    ....

As you used PayPal it is not clear...

    Online Auction Warning
Beware if you're planning to buy Christmas gifts through online 'auction' eBay: you have few rights against eBay if things go wrong, as several readers recently found.

We've heard from six people who'd bought items by bidding on eBay, but received either nothing, or fakes, from the seller. Five concerned one seller based in Thailand.

One Which? reader sent us DVDs of The Jungle Book, for which she'd paid the seller £50. Their poor quality made her suspicious. We showed them to the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), which confirmed they were fakes. The seller refused a refund. Another seller, who sent her a DVD of The Aristocats which turned out to be fake, did refund her money.

FACT told us it had found 9,000 counterfeit items for sale on UK eBay so far this year.

eBay says it's 'only a venue ... a trading platform'. It just puts buyers and sellers in touch with each other. The site carries a disclaimer to this effect.

Your rights are mostly against whoever sold the goods - and they may be based abroad.

eBay claims that just one in a thousand transactions results in a confirmed case of fraud. It offers a 'fraud protection programme' with cover for up to £120, but there are several conditions, which deterred some of our complainants from applying. One who did got back a fraction of what he lost. Site users can leave feedback about sellers, but that didn't stop five buyers getting caught by the Thai fraudster before he was barred. eBay says it has software which 'aims' to prevent dodgy sellers re-registering - but it stopped short of claiming it always worked.

Isn't one of the advantages of paying by paypal that you can do a chargeback (ie you can get your money back)?

I'm not sure how you do it though....although I guess someone on the community boards on ebay could tell you.

Thanks for the help. I'm working on getting my money back through PayPal, but if that fails I'll try the credit card.
