Can somebody give me a rough estimate on whether this garden will get any sun?

  • We’re only checking this out due to our current house being east facing and completely losing the sun 4pm onwards! We neglect our garden because this issue!

    Is the site level/flat?
How many stories are the various properties?

67; garden will get late afternoon & evening sun
you've got 69s garage in your garden,
68s garage & drive next to you, but not on their frontage. Chance it doesnt get maintained?

100; sun for most of the day, then reduced in the evening
garden has been squeezed, & there's an access path running at the back of it for properties 86,87, 98, 99. Is it secured?
What are properties 86-88, what does the * mean?
How much of the side space are you responsible for?

I'm assuming that relates to Housing Association properties.

So to add to Edgex's comment, have you factored this into the equation?

I think plot 67 looks awful. Don't forget in reality those gardens will be tiny and you have a garage and a house right on your boundary so it would feel really hemmed in. I don't think it would get much sun in the evening either and none during the day, new builds just aren't great if a garden is important.

You wont get much sun anyway in Carlisle so maybe it doesn't matter!

I am in a new build with a NW facing garden, and similar to plot 67 there aren't any houses/garages in close proximity to the NW (closest house to NW is about 30m away). We get the evening sun until around 8pm before it starts to drop below that house.

I worried about the garden never getting any sun in the summer but that hasn't been an issue at all. The only downside is that the garden doesn't really get any sun in the winter.

Plot 67 looks like it would be quite private as well - no other properties are directly looking over the garden.

The garden for plot 100 looks tiny so is unlikely that is would get any evening sun, even at the bottom of the garden as the house will cast shadow over it.

There was a poster recently that asked about a development, got warned there were big trees on the plan that would shade the property.

They went ahead anyway then came back here moaning.

My back garden faces, roughly, NNE. Gets the sun first thing then as the sun moves round, the existence of a fence and big trees means it gets shadier and shadier. As I type this, at about 13.30, the top 15 foot of the garden is in shade. This is a boon - it's just the right temperature for sitting out. A friend in a new build with a south facing garden cannot sit in it during the summer as it is way too hot, even with a big parasol.

My garden is huge, so if I want to sit in the sun I just need to take my chair further away from the building. The issue with new build gardens is not so much orientation but that they are so tiny.
