  • I have a similar question.
I want to buy my 14 year old daughter a laptop for birthday/Xmas.
The only proviso is that I have got to get it from PC World/Currys as I have been saving up their vouchers from work all year.
I have a budget of £500 - as long as it has a minimum of 1GB RAM (to play her blasted Sims games which I can then get rid off my PC!) and a cd or dvd re-writer I will consider anything.
Is it better to get a 'trusted' brand such as a Toshiba instead of their own Advent or E systems?

Thanks for any information, sorry if anyone thinks I'm hijacking this thread.

It's got Vista Basic and only 512MB Ram, but otherwise not bad value.

I'd try and find something with Vista Home Premium and 1GB Ram personally.

  • Well it has only 512Mb Ram, personally if that is your budget, then I would suggest this Fujitsu Siemens Esprimo at £299.97 +P&P

Ive got a similar one, and the only criticism is that it only comes with 512mb of memory, and the battery doesnt last long, 70 mins. or so, but apart from that its very good. I upgraded mine to 1Gb of memory, and it was worth doing. I presume its only for surfing/mail?

And some low-spec gaming - Sims 2 kind of thing - what do you think Dude?

  • It has the same processor as the tosh you linked to, no, and to be honest you will probably struggle to find any dual core desktop OR laptop at this budget

ebuyer have got one with the same processor but 1GB of RAM. I've bought one for the folks and will be setting it up over the weekend (it's at home but I'm in foreign climes) so not sure what it's like to use but it's got 4.5 stars (90%) on the reviews.

Can let you know how it performs at the weekend but I don't have Sims 2 I'm afraid and I doubt it's up to Orange Box :D
Space for rent, apply within - Free trial on Thanks button though

I just recommended this for a friend and it seems like a decent spec for £299 - free delivery as well! Vista premium too:)
  • It has the vista premium over the Vista home basic, same processor, same ram, but smaller hard drive. Better battery life. That would get my vote over the one I linked to
