A friend of mine has an old Skoda Octavia. It's the ordinary saloon, not an estate, but it's got the most enormous boot I've ever seen - when we're taking our Scouts on camping trips, he always ends up carting the lion's share of the kit around. Might be worth a look, and you can probably pick up a very good second-hand one for well within your budget, plus you'll hopefully get the reliability that Skodas have come to be well-known for.

I can (just) fit husband, three teenagers, tent & tackle into the Mondeo with roofbag.
Plus it wasn't an expensive car so I can abuse it vilely, and still find spares.

If you aren't planning on more than 2 children & you love your current car, stick with it! Possibly put some of the money saved on a specific driving lesson on reversing etc with trailer, so you can enjoy your holiday more? And perhaps roofbars, topbox etc but only if you really cannot cope with a trailer (I couldn't).

I'm a big fan of estates, having had them for 20+ years. They are useful so often for carrying stuff.
I'm also a fan or trailers, for moving bigger stuff when needed.
However, as you have the trailer, unless you're camping every other weekend, the trailer seems the best solution, without needing to spend any money. if it's an enclosed one, it also has the advantage that you can keep it loaded with the camping stuff ready to make a quick departure for a weekend away at short notice when you fancy it.
If it ain't broke, don't fix it...
