Comparison Sites vs Direct

Options
I recently had reason to query my yearly travel insurance conditions - the best policy I needed at the time was taken out via a comparison website. People might be interested to know that conditions under a policy can differ depending on whether bought direct or via the comparison site - despite the policy being from the same company and carrying the same title. It's not just the price. As their agents told me, 'they have to pare it down'. How would we know, apart from checking each individual condition word for word? They were trying to charge me for another new policy whereas if I had gone direct, my situation would have been covered. My query was resolved after I lodged a complaint. I was also told that if comparing comparison sites against direct quotes, to always remove cookies first. I had no idea that two same titled policies could differ - something I suspect could apply to other insurances although the Agent would not comment. Just one more thing to bear in mind when negotiating the insurance minefield!
