Driving a car that has Motor Trade Insurance. Is 'courtesy car' a legal definition?

Hi there

I am with Quote Me Happy. Learnt my lesson as I want a quick answer and not getting one.

I am borrowing a car from a garage but it is not a courtesy car as such (is there a legal definition?), it is a car registered to the owner's motor trade insurance. My own car is waiting for specialist help.

My comprehensive insurance covers me to drive any car, And a car from a garage for 7 days.

I might need it for 10. Anyone with any experience relating to the above?

I know the answer is getting it confirmed with the company - I will try and get a straight answer for them. It is proving hard.

  • No, unfortunately not.

It is on the owner's motor trade insurance and the level of cover he has means not.

I guess I will just have to buy insurance for any length of time after 7 days.

I am done with quote me happy. No answers. In desperation I phoned the claims line. They bounced me around for 25 minutes. Clearly they were just waiting until I hung up.

    Thanks for the reply.

I got caught out with this and ended up with 6 points and a hefty fine and I had to pay to get the garages car back. Never again! (this was 2006 though).

I have just had my car repaired after an accident, the place appointed to do the repair told me that I would be covered by my own insurance.
  • Have a look at Cuvva, who do short term drive-any-car insurance for individual drivers.

And you believed them? It was your responsibility to m are sure: their assurance wouldn’t have helped if you weren’t covered.

Cuvva was a bit of a pain to setup, asking for more info as you progress.

Awkward when your trying to be sneaky and not let the person know your insuring them.

Need to install the app then add a photo of the drivers licence and the driver then add pictures of the car etc.

Eventually got it done, bonus was it took a while to sort and the quote time/price expired. Had to get a new quote and it was now a little bit cheaper.

Sorry, what? Why on earth would you want or need to do that?
