overcharged due to faulty Meter

Options
Our electricity bill has seemed excessively high for a long time, so last year I contacted my current supplier (Octopus) and told them so and said I think there must be some issue with the meter as we should not be using that much.
They said everything was fine, there was no problem.
Then this year we got switched to a new smart meter.
As soon as this was done, I immediately noticed that our average kwph usage went down, and after watching it was a week, our usage was very obviously lower. So it seems there was indeed an issue with the previous meter.

I reported this to Octopus, who monitored it for 3 months, and then confirmed that our usage was indeed lower now and agreed there must have been an issue with the old meter. They have offered me a £400 refund, but only from the date I contacted them till the date we got the new meter (November 2018 - March 2019), stating they cannot confirm anything before this.

Obviously, this is nonsense, they can confirm my usage right up to the day I joined them in the same way they have compared my usage from Nov 2018.
If I have overpaid by £400 just for those 4 months, then this would amount to $thousands in over payments prior to this.

Do I have any legal rights here, is there any way to get further refunds for over payments to my current provider at least?

  • I am very happy for you that you think you would have noticed earlier. Perhaps try putting the brain in gear before activating the mouth and resorting to snide or sarcastic comments.

FYI, I did notice earlier, and had brought it up with previous suppliers as well, but was also fobbed off and told everything was fine. I had no way to prove otherwise until this smart meter was installed and did it for me.

I just did not feel the need to write some massive memoir explaining my entire history of electricity suppliers.

Captain has somebody replied to your 1st post and was not very nice and you or somebody has got that post removed?

Only saying as OP is No.1 and then your reply makes no sense as that is No.2 so the post i think you replied to must have deleted. Thay maybe why posters copy and paste the post they are replying to as they can get deleted.

It can be very hard to keep track of some threads on MSE when the post's get deleted and and all the replies after it don't make a lot os sense. It would be better if OP was No.1 and the reply that Captain got was No.2 and Captain replied to that poat making it No.3. When post No. was deleted it would be better just to have post No.2 saying "deleted" and then carry on but that may just be my way of thinking.

    Good luck with your issue.
