pls help - new pc with vista and a new iphone. sound problems

hi
i have just bought a pc with vista and a new iphone.
i have spent the day downloading music, films and videos off the net.( norton protection)
all the music mp3's that i have downloaded and transferred from itunes to the iphone have played on the phone without problems.
i then tried to transfer a music video to the iphone and it transferred without sound,i tried opening it in itunes and it plays no sound there or in windows media player, i thought i'd downloaded a duff file, but it plays fine with quicktime.
since noticing this i also noticed that anything (music files inc.) i try to play in itunes or windows media player plays without sound and itunes has now decided not to let me play music at all, but will send it to the iphone fine.
i'm a complete novice at stuff like this, please could someone help.
i don't know if it's a related problem or not, but the computer won't receognise when i put muic cd's into the drive.
