Sure, but GDPR hasn't changed anything in this regard. You've always been able to sue for damages, however you actually need some losses to quantify.

You can't just sue a company for the loss/misuse of your data.

    You're missing the point.

Is he? Care to elaborate on what "the point" is? Because at the moment it's difficult to see what can be claimed for, unless the Government/whoever lay down rules for GDPR breaches (like was done for PPI mis-selling)..

Sure, I'll elaborate... Past, present and future tense.

    So..

my office was broken into and burgled last week..

and I can't help but think it may have something to do with my bank and office details being shared by Mercedes to another customer, in their accident.. but of course.. one cannot prove this.. but 6 weeks after my details were shared, with my office address in the email thread as that was where the car was being delivered, and from where I was driving to and from, it was burgled.

You think the other Mercedes customer with a similar email address happened to be a burglar? Why would they choose to break into your office?

I can understand someone breaking into premises to steal keys for the Merc parked outside, but they hardly need to wait for a GDPR breach in order to do that.

Or someone has noticed a brand new Mercedes parked outside the office and thought "I bet they've got a few quid."

Sounds incredibly unlikely but let the investigating officer know about it anyway.

I dunno.. I feel 6 weeks is enough time for a person/group of individuals to obtain finance and company info from companies house, and calculate/assess the area and pick up on working habits etc to then plan to break in. My car was only delivered to my work place-it doesn't stay there.

It's not about someone waiting.. one obviously hopes that when their info is released without their consent, nothing bad happens. but someone, when presented with information that they weren't meant to see, could take advantage of the situation and surely pass this on to others, if they don't act upon the information themselves..

The simple fact is you cannot in anyway evidence that one event caused the other... so the debate is somewhat a fruitless endeavour.
