Simple home Insurance question (i hope!)

Hi all,

I'm afraid I'm a bit of a dunce when it comes to home insurance, so I have a simple question maybe one of you clever people can help me out with?

I always understood that buildings insurance was for the house and contents insurance was for your tv, carpet, chairs, etc

I seem to remember being told by someone though that buildings insurance will not cover electrical circuits, plaster board, doors and fittings, if the worst happened and your house was destroyed!

So what I really saying is if I need to take out insurance and I want my house back as it is now, (excluding, tv, computer, chairs) but with doors and lights do I need to take out contents insurance?

Thanks

  • Rough rule of thumb is to imagine that you picked your house up and shook it.

All the things that fell out are covered by contents insurance, and the buildings insurance would cover the rest. ;)

(there are exceptions to the rule, but as a rough guide the above is correct).

Just don't go back to that person for any further advice on insurance, as what they told you was rubbish. Buildings insurance covers all permanent fixtures and structural items (assuming you own the property freehold). None of the items you describe are 'contents'.
  • Thanks, look like I can lower my contents liability!
