Surely he would have had to be a French citizen for French law to apply.

Just because he lived with his family does that make him a resident?

Just to Update. Well there is no real update, but looks like a lost cause.

    Thanks for all the info.

Today they posted pictures of themselves drinking champagne and eating lobster with the Aston Martin in the background.

I hope they and their new found wealth are happy.

The question would now be, does your MiL have a will, especially in light of her new found wealth?

If so was it made after she married her current husband?
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

As long as they are still in France and don't take formal steps to use English law, French successon law will ensure that her children - rather than her husband - will have first dibs on what's left.
  • As they have been caring for the frail grandfather the result seems right, I hope they do enjoy it.

I am not looking for money,
    Really?

    Let's recap...

A woman and her husband provide 24/7 care for her elderly father for several years. On dad's death, daughter inherits and absentee granddaughter's expectations are disappointed.

    How very unreasonable of granddad
