hotel hasn't charged card

Hi folks,

I read this website a lot for money saving tips but am a first-time poster :j

A couple of weeks ago I stayed in a hotel in Greece which I booked through booking.com. On arrival the owner gave me a receipt for my stay (about 700 euros) and I got an sms from my bank (as usual) saying that a charge had been made on my credit card to this amount.

However, now my account shows absolutely no record of this. I even called the bank and they said they had no record of it. It appears that I simply haven't been charged for the stay.

Might the hotel charge me in the future? This would be kinda annoying because we only have one income in my household and we have to plan our months quite carefully. Also, if this is the case, what is to stop me simply blocking the credit card I used so they can't charge me? (other than honesty, of course!)

Thanks in advance! :money:

Had a similar situation with our visit to New York.
Hotel used our credit card for the Tourist tax and damage deposit, it showed on my account as pending then just disappeared. A couple of days later the tourist tax payment was withdrawn.

Maybe your hotel needs to adjust the amount.
  • Perhaps set that £700 aside for this eventuality to come up later and say no more?

    One word INTEGRITY...look it up.

Contact them and ask them to process the payment. They have six (yes six) years to claim the money. You had the 'stay' so you pay. Many families have only one income, it's not an excuse to commit fraud. You may try and block the credit card but that will no doubt be challenged by the Hotel and you will have to pay and may lose your credit card account.
  • Calm down, rainbow, it was a hypothetical question. Thanks for the replies!

Yes - they might charge you in the future. If you've been on holiday - but haven't yet paid for it - you need to make sure that money is available until they take it. You can't use the excuse of 'well you didn't charge me so I spent the money on something else'.

Not sure why this would be an issue, presumably you had budgeted for the £700 already so it isn't like it is an unexpected expense. Move the £700 you had set aside into an account that pays interest, if and when it does appear on your statement you can pay it down and you may have earned a few pence in interest in the interim.

They have 6 years to claim and closing the card won’t help you’ll still get a statement from your Cc company even if you’ve closed the card.

If your concerned about it being mixed up with your household finances then open a new savings account and put the £700 in it an leave it there for 6 years,

Personally I wouldn’t want it hanging over me so I would try to pay, but if you’ve already done that, then save it. However do be aware you are not free to spend it fo 6 years.

Greek law, not UK, is what you need to be aware of.

Just earmark the money and don't spend it.
