Stupid Credit Card question

Hi

Sorry to ask a stupid question re Credit Cards but here goes -

I (We) don't really use credit cards but I would like to get one for online purchase etc.

Which one would people recommend?

We don't need to up our credit limit etc so it is merely card to use for online purchase and abroad etc (Got caught out with car rental in Holland last week when i didn't have a credit card!!!)

Thanks
Stevo

The best place to make your first application is with the bank with whom you have a current account. They already know you and they will have data on you to show how you conduct yourself financially.

Depending on what you want to get from them, credit cards can be useful tools to save money and bag a few rewards for buying things you would normally already buy - but they can also get you into serious debt if not managed properly. Make sure whatever you do that when you take out a card, you set up a direct debit to pay off your balance in FULL every month - doing so will avoid any interest charges.

Your existing bank is usually the first port of call, however it'd be worth looking around - if you shop at a particular store often (eg. your local supermarket) it may be worth getting a store-branded card to pick up some rewards for your usual spending. If you only plan to use it overseas, then one with good overseas rates may be a better option (make sure the limit is high enough to cover the security deposit required for hotels, rental cars, etc).
