Is there a way to retreive pension contribution made 7-8 years ago.
I used to be employee but now work as self -employed.

In terms of getting back the contributions you made if what you are after is cash back in your bank account, this is highly unlikely if you're under 55.

However the money invested is still yours, and if what you mean is that you want to take control of the pot you can certainly do that by opening your own pension (a SIPP) and transferring the previous contributions in. You can also make your own new contributions into that so it is all in one place.

Was this a defined benefit pension scheme or a defined contribution scheme?

Assuming it is standard DC scheme it will be sat somewhere with one of the pension providers ( not with your ex employer ) Contact the ex employer for details of the pension provider they use. Then you will have to contact the pension provider directly and then hopefully they will be able to tell you how much it is worth .
Pension money does not just disappear , so it will be still be there , somewhere.

You can ask either or both of your ex-employer and the pension company for information about what you paid in, although when doing so it'll help if you don't keep referring to 'retrieval' as many will interpret that to mean that you want access to the money itself rather than just the information about it!

Edit: it's still not clear from earlier posts exactly what you're trying to achieve - are you simply trying to find out the contribution history and/or current valuation, or are you actually looking to get your hands on the money (if you're old enough)?
