The thing about chaos is, it's fair.

Self employment doesn't use the PAYE system so you don't need a PAYE tax code.0

If the OP has just begun self-employment, they may not have registered as such with HMRC. So, phone them and register. You don't get a tax code (as in the code used by an employer to deduct PAYE tax) but you do get a reference number that identifies you.0

Say you start a job and they ask for you tax code, how do you give it to them?
Otherwise you will have to pay emergency tax
You give them your P45 from previous employment or if you dont have one, you complete a new starter checklist and tick one of 3 boxes re your circumstances, the answer then dictates what tax code is used. You can also phone HMRC to tell them your circumstances and they tell your employer what tax code to use.0 -

Then you're not self employed. If you're self employed you give the company you're working for an invoice and you account for the tax and pay it over to HMRC when you complete your self assessment tax return.0 -
If somebody is starting a new job from self employment, then they don’t have a P45 to give to new employer.
What do they need to give to avoid emergency tax to start with?Nothing has been fixed since 2008, it was just pushed into the future0 -

"Emergency tax" as far as HMRC is concerned allows for the basic personal allowance. So your tax code (for the current year) is 1250 applied on a Week 1 or Month 1 basis.
This will be used if the new employee completes a New Starter Checklist form and says they don't have other earnings from self-employment or employment.
If you can't say that, then basic rate (20%) will be deducted from all pay.0 -

So the the emergency tax unavoidable if you can’t give your new employer a p45?
Is it automatically worked out for you to get it back later, or is it upto you to apply for the tax back if it’s due back to you?Nothing has been fixed since 2008, it was just pushed into the future0 -

I think you need to give a few more details.
Are you self employed as well as employed/ now employed was self employed?
What were you doing before starting this job?
Have you any employed income this tax year before starting this job?
If employed and self employed what level of earnings aprox for each?0
