The least you could do is stick it in a Marcus savings account (currently paying 1.5% inc bonus). Account opening is quick and easy - was with me anyway.

How about a notice account? There are a few paying 1.8% if you give them anywhere between 95 and 120 days warning.

    Chop chop!

Never heard of Marcus. Need to investigate that one. Thanks for the words of wisdom, I must do something positive about this rubbish account.
    :D I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe :D

After Barclays refused to increase my student overdraft then told me that the bank deemed the money I spent rushing 200 miles home in an emergency when my father was dying in intensive care was ‘an unacceptable use of my money and I had no reason to spend it’ I told them in rather colourful terms to shove their account and I’ve gone elsewhere.
I’ve banked with them since 2001.

Unless you are really determined to leave Barclays you could just leave the Barclays account paying your your direct debits - council tax, gas bill etc etc and pay in enough each month to cover that

you could then open a new account with a different bank for your 'real' bank account if I can use that word - have your salary paid in there etc
  • Update - contacted Barclays today to wonder why nearly two weeks later there's still no sign of this account.
Turns out that although we've had a joint account for 25 years the missus has never been into a branch to give her signature.
As we're abroad for the summer they show little interest in doing anything to facilitate our request until she she does this.
Presumably with a quill and ink onto parchment paper.
Asked why I can set up a Starling/Monzo account within an hour without a signature the drone at the Liverpool call centre didn't have an answer.
Asked why they didn't contact me to tell me this they said they tried once by 'phone but when no-one answered didn't bother pursuing it.
Asked why with an online banking account they couldn't send a message either through the account or to my email address the drone didn't have an answer.
Crappy service from a crap bank.
I'm closing the account I've held with them for decades and moving approx £130,000 elsewhere.
These people deserve to lose their jobs if customers desert them in droves.

If I were you, I keep the account open and retain payment cards etc just in case there is a problem with the Starling account.

It makes sense to have several banking relationships in case of IT meltdowns and the like.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that we don't get another thread next week entitled 'Starling suspended my new Euro account!':)

My wife also received duplicate letters from Barclays saying her savings account would be closed in October as a default action if no transactions were made.
The irony in the letter is that Barclays made it as difficult as they possibly could to transfer the money out.
Locked logins,, transactions not carried through and most unhelpful help lines. "Do you really want to draw your money out?"
Yes I do, and that's what I'm attempting to do, thank you.
In comparison Nationwide, First Direct and Marcus all worked all worked straightforwardly, seamlessly and immediately
    Bye bye Barclays.

If that's the level of courtesy you extend to call centre staff (who don't make policy and can't necessarily produce an on-the-spot justification of how the policy is arrived at) then I'm sure Liverpool shed a tear at your leaving. It's a small mercy that, as a Premier customer, you weren't reduced to having to speak to the "standard" offshore call centre based in India; I dread to think how you would have described them.
