AS others have said, take shorter showers and fewer of them. I can get fully washed and rinsed, hair included in less than two minutes. My wife takes at bit longer but it's still less than five minutes.

Turn stuff OFF when it's not in use - at the wall or unplug it.

Start keeping records of your daily consumption and a log of what is switched on an when and you should find the culprits (either high energy consuming devices or high energy consuming teenagers). TV,s X-Boxs, Sky boxes and other stuff can get through a lot of leccy in a day if they are left on.

Likewise, washingmachines and dishwashers use just as much energy when half full as when fully loaded.

You can only control your consumption when you know what's using it and when
Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large numbers

Do the teenagers all have gaming PCs? You're averaging over 1600W which is pretty hefty.

Hopefully you don't have any light fittings with 50W halogen bulbs?

When/if the teenagers go to bed, get them to switch off the PCs etc at the wall socket.

It might be time to get an energy monitor - if your meter has a pulsing LED, you can get one that's really accurate. You'll then have a live readout of consumption and you can go around turning things off to see the impact. I use a Geo Minim+ and it's great.

One has an xbox one and I've started to get him to turn it off at the plug socket overnight now. I have also ordered a Geo Minim + which will be here tomorrow so can't wait to actually start seeing how much we are using in real time. Thank you for the advice. :)
  • Thank you for everyone's replies and suggestions. We are all now on a 5 minute timer for showers, tv's are being turned off at the wall when not in use and I am super conscious of our usage. The kids are going to hate me but I need to lower our consumption and bills.

Do you have LED bulbs throughout the house?

These are a relatively cheap way to reduce your electricity consumption.

The biggest factor may be have you switched in the last year, What are you paying per KWH??

Turning things off at the wall is a bit pointless IMO, none of it should be using more than 2-5w in stand by and so what £10 a year? Its going to be the shower, washer, dishwasher, halogen bulbs? How many washers a day for cloths and dishes, at least 1 a day?

Now if you have 4 laptops they may be 60w each, and the xbox will be around 150w during gaming.

Have you got a modern LED tv? That will be under 50W check the label, The biggest constant 24/7 load may be a sky box with a recorder.

The Geo Minim helped big time for us in identifying the problem devices and resolving it. It also helped identify a meter fault (E7 timer more than 2 hours off). We went from £12 a day down to around £6 a day. Lets hope you can get the same benefit from it.

    £12 per day!!!!

Wow. Thats some consumption. I would cry if ours was your current £6 per day
  • Geo Minim is very good and you can see straight away when something is eating energy.
