The mystery of number of 'views' on Ebay listings.

I list regularly on Ebay and Im always at a loss to understand how some items get loads of views and some hardly any.

Yesterday I listed 2 ladies blouses, both the same make, same size, same colour, both short sleeve (all stated in the item title) and both photographed well.

The only difference was that one had 3 buttons on the front and one did not.

My 3 button one has had 37 views, the other 3.

Last week I had 2 identical summer dresses, one navy and one black. The navy one had 117 views and 17 watchers, the black had 22 views and didn't sell.

Anyone with a lot of Ebay experience able to shed any light on why such a massive difference?

Im baffled, I could understand a reasonable difference in views but not such massive discrepancies. When I look at my full list of items on sale some will sometimes show maybe 2 views in a full week where others will have 30 or 40 and Im at a loss to understand why this would be. I sell a lot of ladies tops/dresses so my items are all of a similar type, Im not comparing views on clothing against different types of listings.

eBay do say that not all of your items may be visible, so maybe that's what's happening.

Have you tried signing in under another user name to see if you can find them ?

I find that the search results done on my mobile and on my desktop PC do not match. Usually a couple shown on one and not the other.

Ebay also have a nice habit of hiding the perfect item and showing a load of more expensive items first. Hides the cheaper item or the item that matched my search perfectly and you need to click that show all button.

Bought something cheaply once because it did not show on any searches.
Search by item heading, seller, item number nothing found at all.

Viewing the sellers listed items and they had nothing for sale. Thinking is it a scam/website manipulated? But no I bought it cheaply and it arrived in good time.

I find the same, I'll list something and hardly any views, then relist it and there will be loads and a bidding war. It's really frustrating, I'd rather it just sold the first time!

I agree. I had something listed as a BIN for around 4 months at £7, had some of my included free auctions listed left so switched it to auction and it ended up at £14.25 - 3 unique bidders! Why they didn't buy it when it was a BIN I have no idea.

    Frustrating isnt it.

I did as the earlier poster suggested and signed in on my friends account and did find my items but they were way down the pages.

Ive studied the 'sold' listings for similar items to see if my title description is lacking or if anything stands out in those listing which mine are lacking but no clues there.

I always put the type, size, colour, sleeves/sleeveless, condition in the title
Funnily enough, when I looked at ladies tops in the sort of price range and makes I was selling I went to 'ending soonest' to see how many had bids and went through 47 with no bids before I got to the first one that had sold. It was badly photographed, very nondescript and the title was 'Ladies Top Size 16.' Not even a colour mentioned. Yet it had 6 bids?

    Baffled doesnt even come close!

When I list, I sometimes look for my items to see visibility a few days after I have listed them. Some don't show even when I search for the item exactly as I have listed it.

I always thought they had preferred sellers (not sponsored ones) who probably sell loads and make eBay a fortune who are always at the top of visibility.
  • If you are listing in a category that uses "promote your listings", then your items will be demoted below those promoted or not even shown in certain "views" at all. Basically this is how eBay now operate, sellers effectively pay off eBay a back hander on top of all their other fees, just to get your item remotely visible.
