For one thing, in other countries people tend not to be as obsessed with forming "chains" as they are in England & Wales, so there isn't as much work involved in trying to coordinate all the transactions or risk of one awkward party upsetting the whole thing.
Perhaps part of the issue is, there's no easy way to get short term accommodation to tide you over a few weeks - the LL is always hostage to a minimum 6 months (soon to be 12? ) period hence you as a renter are also locked into 6 months making it very expensive.0 -
People have used holiday let's before for this sort of thing.0

Yes, there are workarounds but they don't always apply, for example let say you live in Devon and need a short term let for July-Aug, that's going to be expensive in holiday accom even if it was available which it likely wouldn't be. Our system is broken but it would need a lot of things changed to fix it.
Not sure what happens in Scotland. Some say that's better. Do they still ahve the chain problem there ?0 -

Outside the UK I think there's more of an expectation that you'll be renting for a while before buying another property, rather than viewing it as one continuous process.0
