indoor soil/compost smells

bought some plants . i put one indoors, and got a large planter pot and put in some fresh new compost from diy shop.
The probem i have now is that the soil has caused the room to smell and now with the heat its uncomfortable. So why is this?
its not a foul or bad smell but very earthy and strong.
i have other plants indoors but i admit they only have a small amount of soil, this one has like a whole 10kg bag of soil. So what options do i have apart from moving the plant outdoor, do you need special non odour indoor plant soil/compost or something else?
thanks
