Curtains over radiator

I've got a radiator in the centre of a double glazed bay window. I've got blinds up, but they don't keep the light out well in the longer summer days so I'm adding curtains.

Weirdly, curtains that would hang all the way to the floor are on offer about £50 cheaper than ones that would sit above the heater. Would I regret going for these? I figure I'd waste a little heat, but I'd rarely need to have them closed all the way and the heating on - so itd take me years to waste £50 worth of heat (and floor length curtains will look nice :) ).

Well in the deep midwinter evenings when you do have them closed you might as well not have a radiator in the room at all

Thanks. I guess when they're not fully closed across the radiator (in the short winter days I normally want what light I can get!) that won't be much of a problem?

Of course you could always buy the longer curtains and shorten them.

Our living room has three large windows, and we had thick full-length curtains made - they also go over the radiators.

We didn't notice any difference in the room temperature; I'm sure there was, but we didn't notice.

The difference will be in your fuel bills.

I'm moving radiators to other walls as I redecorate/refurbish each room. The lounge radiator was originally under the bay window - That has now been moved to an adjacent wall. In the process, it got rid of a !!!!!! run of pipes round the skirting board. Can't really comment on energy savings or improvement in warmth as I also fitted a stove in that room.

One bedroom so far, has had the radiator moved from under the window to the opposite wall - Certainly feels a bit warmer up there during the winter months.

I always presumed ( maybe wrongly ) that radiators were placed under windows to combat cold air entering a room:eek:

Window cools air, air falls onto radiator, air gets hot, air circulates around room.

In the days of single glazed windows, it was the traditional way of "doing things". But modern, efficient double (or even triple) glazing means less heat is lost through the window. Throw in some heavy thermal drapes, and there is even less need to place the radiator under a window.
